Volunteers Like Will Abel Make It Happen!

Volunteering is a rewarding way for citizens to be engaged in their favorite parks. Those who volunteer their time for Cincinnati Parks directly contribute to a more vibrant and healthy community. The Park Board recognizes volunteers who go above and beyond to make outstanding impacts. During the November 2018 Board Meeting, Will Abel, a Freshman at Clark Montessori High School, was recognized for his volunteerism with Explore Nature.

Each summer, Explore Nature enlists the invaluable assistance of teens to serve in our summer camps. Teens who are interested in nature education, helping other kids, and campers who have “aged out” of summer camps may apply, interview and attend an orientation to qualify for the summer youth program.  The 2018 summer camp season was particularly successful, receiving approximately 4,000 volunteer hours from dedicated citizens like Will.

As a child, Will was able to enjoy and learn about nature through the summer camp program. Now he is empowered to lead by example and continue his involvement while gaining leadership skills and having fun in nature. Along with his fellow camp leaders, he was charged with keeping the campers safe, engaged in positive and playful activities and was an advocate for the natural environment. Will helped Parks staff organize games, complete crafts, assist campers during lunchtime, and was the ‘caboose’ on daily hikes.  A true role model, he dedicates his time volunteering for several local organizations such as, The Caring Place, Matthew 25 Ministries, Beechwood Homes, and the Down Syndrome Association of Cincinnati.
