French Park Trail Dedication Was a Heartwarming Success

In August of 2017, the Cohen, the Michelman and the Shifman families made a generous gift to the Cincinnati Parks Foundation to restore all of the hiking trails in French Park. Over the following two years, the hiking trail system was refurbished including the construction of new bridges, steps and reopening sections of trail closed due to fallen trees, debris and erosion. The work was performed by Cincinnati Parks’ newly established ‘Trail Crew.’

On June 7, 2019, city leaders joined with the Cincinnati Park Board, the Cincinnati Parks Foundation, the donors and community members to officially cut the ribbon on the renovated French Park hiking trails.  A brief ceremony was held at the Sierra Trail trailhead to commemorate the project and recognize the donors who made it possible. The families were given the honor of cutting the ribbon, which proved to be a truly heartwarming moment. The ceremony was followed by all participants hiking on the newly dedicated trails.

Cincinnati Parks Director Wade Walcutt  remarked, “Maintaining a system of this size and caliber doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of hard work, and most often partners like these stepping forward to help. The Cohen, the Michelman and the Shifman families working with the Parks Foundation have made this possible; I want to especially thank them.” He continued, “I also want to give a shout out to our newly formed Trail Crew. Their sole mission is to address critical needs at hiking trails throughout our system, all 65 miles. It is a big job but I know they are up to the task.”

The trails will now be able to continue to serve as an amenity for generations of Cincinnatians to enjoy and explore for years to come.
