Fall Outside – Explore Nature Fall Programming

Fall is right around the corner! This season is a time to admire the beauty of nature, with the changing leaves, crisper weather and fall fruit and food. There’s no better time than autumn to head outdoors and experience all its beauty, and it can be enjoyed in all of our parks. Luckily, our nature education team, Explore Nature!, has expert Naturalists to show you all the changes that go on in our parks during fall. Below you will see a list of fall programming that you won’t want to miss out on. From fall foliage hikes to Halloween themed events, you’re bound to find an activity that’s perfect for you, your friends and your family.

Nature Tots | LaBoiteaux Woods | Tuesdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26 | 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Moms and caregivers, do you and your toddler need some fresh air? Come catch your breath while enjoying some quality time with your little one. You will both get a taste of nature through naturalist led stories, games, animal encounters and more in a safe a relaxing atmosphere. New theme each week. All outdoors. Severe weather cancels event.

Costumed Character Hike | Caldwell Nature Preserve | October 15 | 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Walk through a pumpkin-lit trail meeting costumed characters from nature and history. This is a non-scary holiday walk best suited to children ages 3-10 years. Make it a family tradition! $8/person, ages 3 & up.

Jack-O-Lantern Hike | Caldwell Nature Preserve | October 16 | 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Join us on a bright moonlit October night to enjoy the jack-o lanterns and luminaries on the trail. There will be no costumed characters during this Saturday evening event. $5/person, ages 3 & up.

Campfire on the Bluff: Spooooooky Campfire Stories | California Woods Nature Preserve | October 22 | 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The natural choice for pre-Halloween festivities! Join us for a campfire and (not so) spooky storytelling on top of a beautiful bluff in the woods. Follow the luminaries up a short but steep set of stone stairs to our Austin E. Knowlton campfire area, where we will light the fire and tell stories under the stars. Enjoy an optional short night hike between stories, where we will listen and learn about the sounds, sights and smells of nature at night. FREE.

Free Hike Fridays: Forests, Foliage and Fungi, Oh My!  | California Woods Nature Preserve | October 22, 29 & November 5 | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Fall is marching right along. Join us to enjoy the fall foliage as the leaves drop, try out our winter tree ID, check out the bounty of fall wild edibles, and observe fungi! FREE.

Burnet Woods Fall Foliage Hike | Burnet Woods | November 6 | 10:30 am – noon

Join a park naturalist for a guided interpretive hike through beautiful Burnet Woods. Along the way well discover the secrets behind the annual fall color change, how to identify trees by their fall color and how the local wildlife is preparing for the coming winter. FREE.

Fernbank River Walk | Fernbank Park | November 13 | 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Don’t let the first frost keep you from getting outside! Get your steps in before the Thanksgiving feasting begins. We’ll point out trees and wildlife we see along the riverbank. There is a paved walking path and a nature trail, relatively flat and one mile each. FREE.
