Floral Show Delights

The 2016 Holiday Show at the Krohn Conservatory has a whimsical new twist on holiday tradition!  A Whimsical Wonderland at Krohn invites you to unwrap your wildest imagination and explore poinsettias of a different color!  This show will feature poinsettias of royal blue, lively orange, and deep purple that will join the more traditional hues.

The train display and botanical architecture are intensified with fanciful pompom junipers, vibrant globe amaranths, and cheerful powder puff plants.  Sprigs of painted twigs and patterned branches are intertwined with twisted, curly grasses and various tropical flowers to create this captivating landscape.

Visitors can also experience live musical performances on select dates, the Schmalz Family holiday display, extended “candlelight” nights and great photo opportunities.

Fantastic Train and Historical Botanical Architecture

The traditional garden railway display will be decorated by the Applied Imagination team with new floral accents made from colorful gourds, seed pods, and other natural elements used in the botanical buildings and bridges.

New this year will be a ‘Photo Loco’ feature for family and friends. This group photo opportunity will give visitors the chance to step behind an oversized botanical train engine to pose for pictures and ring the bell!

Additionally, a brand new ‘Enchanted Forest & Whimsical Creatures’ exhibit will be on display in the Fern House. Botanical creatures, fantasy and whimsical buildings situated among three different train tracks in the central bed of the room will delight children of all ages.

The Schmalz Family Display

The Schmalz Family Village display was inspired by childhood holiday spirit. Starting in the 1960’s, Larry Schmalz and his wife Diana began by acquiring motionettes and decorations. These moving display characters were originally displayed in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s in window displays around downtown Cincinnati in retail shops such as Dodd’s Jewelers, Shillito’s and Pogues; the very same stores Larry window shopped as a child. Soon after, their two car garage began to transition into what the family knows as “The Christmas Room”. “The Christmas Room” grew over the years to include a collection of Santa music boxes, a twelve foot tree, a holiday train and mountain scene, and the Caroler Village—modeled after the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. After the passing of Larry Schmalz, the family offered the display to Cincinnati Parks Krohn Conservatory as a donation so that the community can share in the spirit of the season, just as their family had.

Come share the Holiday spirit with us!
